 HOME OF THE POLKA MASS

The Polka Mass consists of the same basic worship service celebrated in the Roman Catholic tradition but utilizing a unique mode of music. Drawing on his Slovenian-Croatian roots, Father Frank Perkovich styled his own version of the Polka Mass on Minnesota’s Iron Range and popularized it in polka centers throughout America.  Folk music, cherished by generations of Slovenian and Croatian people, was especially arranged and adapted with hymn lyrics in English.  These old ethnic melodies are a joyous, inspiring worship service with the most unusual music and orchestration presented in a manner of dignity that enhances the solemnity of the Mass.  Fr. Perkovich’s first Polka Mass was held at the Resurrection Church in Eveleth, Minnesota, on May 5, 1973, with the polka and waltz stylings of Joe Cvek and his orchestra the Polka Massters.

Father Perk With Pope 1 Father Perk With Pope 2
In 1983 Fr. Perkovich and the Polka Massters had the experience of a lifetime, celebrating the Polka Mass on the high altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for Pope John Paul II.  The Pope commended and encouraged Fr. Perkovich in his endeavors with the Polka Mass and was pleased to accept a recording of the Mass.
